Batman: Night of the Owls

You need to check out the latest Batman storyline titled Night of the Owls.  I have been reading the Batman titles since the new 52 from DC comics started, so I may know more about the storyline than most, but any Batman fan needs to check this out.  I am not a real fan of following issue to issue, especially if its books I do not read, but this story is worth it!  I read Batman #8 as well as Nightwing #8 and I cannot wait for the other titles to come out.  Get these issues while you can.  Trust me, you will be glad you did!

2 reasons to read the new 52 Green Lantern

There are 2 reasons you should be reading DC Comics the new 52 issues of Green Lantern.
Both reasons happen to occur in issue # 8 of the series.

Halo mini figures by Mega Bloks

PackI was in Walgreen's today getting some last minute Easter gifts when I noticed with my keen eye the word Halo.  I thought to myself, "What in the world would something of Halo be on the Easter aisle?"  Anyway, I picked the pack up and noticed it was a Mega Bloks mini figure pack.  Now, I am a LEGO man myself, but I couldn't pass getting a few to put on my blog.  Anyway, I bought three packs and brought them home.
As I was looking at the packs, I noticed that this is series 4.  Hell, I never knew they had a series 1.  I knew that Mega Bloks had Halo sets but I never knew that they went the mini figure route like LEGO.  Anyway, I opened up the packs and I didn't get any doubles.  (Which is always a good thing, LoL)
The figures I purchased include the Copper Covenant Brute, an Artic UNSC pilot, and a Blue Covenant Elite.  All in all I am pretty excited about my figures and plan to get more.  I would rate these figures a 7.5 to 8 out of 10.

Firestorm Friday

I know the day is almost over, but I want to wish you a Happy Firestorm Friday!  I found this pattern for a cubecraft Firestorm on deviantart and I wanted to make one before I sent this post.  So that is exactly what I did.  After I followed the pattern I thought it needed more so  I added some tissue paper to the top to get the flame action going.

Magik (the mini-series)

Issue 1I was going through some old comics today and came across a mini-series straight from the pages of the X-men.  The title I found was for the one and only, Magik.  This was her first mini-series and it gave us an inside look at how she would eventually become the powerful mutant everyone knows and loves.  I was planning on reading it tonight.

Issue 2

I was talking (via the internet)  to my friend (the always lovely Pigeon Foo) about it and it turns out she was doing a Magik photo shoot tonight as well.  We had a nice conversation about how bad ass Magik is and she asked me to read them in her honor, so I did.  I mean, what are the odds right?  I find a book I want to read again and I also have a friend cosplaying that very same character on the same day.  I mean, it was destiny!

Magik
Well, as I read the story I was taken back to how well the story was written.  The dimensional differences between the "real" X-men and those who were trapped in the underworld dimension was awesome.  I really enjoyed watching Nightcrawler use three swords as well as the Cat character.  I loved that look and I wondered to myself, "Has anyone cosplayed that version of Kitty Pryde?"  Anyway, it is a kick-ass story that everyone should check out, especially Magik or
X-men fans.  I give it a strong 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Avengers Sketch Cards by Cal Slayton

First of many that I will post.
Avengers 9

Who is your favorite from this sheet?  Mine is a tie between Cap and Hawkeye.

Interview with Cal Slayton

It is time for another interview for you to enjoy.  This interview is with a talented comic artist I came across through Deviantart when I saw his Avenger's trading cards.  I present to you, my interview with Cal Slayton.

Black Queen
1. Who are you and where are you from?

Cal Slayton, I’m a graphic designer / illustrator / comic book artist / sketch card artist. I have a lot of slashes. I used to work on the indie series “Shades of Blue”. My artwork has also been seen in Dead@17 Rough Cut, Super Hero Happy Hour, Digital Webbing Presents, Champion of Children, Potlatch and more. I’ve done sketch card work for Topps, Upper Deck, Rittenhouse, Breygent and more. I currently live in the Dallas area.

2. I just love your style! How did you develop your style?

Like most artist, over time. Growing up I was a big fan of comic book artists like Mike Grell, Jim Aparo, John Byrne, Jack Kirby, George Perez, guys like that, and I would try to emulate them. Then as I got older, I started leaning towards a more cartoony animated style and tried to simplify my stuff like Bruce Timm. So, I’m trying to blend all that together and my style is still developing.

Black Widow

3. By looking at your art, I would say you have read comics so, what is your favorite title?

I don’t read a lot of monthly titles, I tend to “wait for trades”. I like reading in big chunks. Current stuff: I love “The Walking Dead”, I’m trying to catch up on “Invincible”. Any Hellboy that Mignola draws. I really liked “Y: The Last Man” when it was still going. All-time stuff: Fantastic Four, Batman, X-Men.

4. I love your Avengers trading cards. Which one is your favorite?

I don’t know that I have a favorite. But I really had fun doing the villains and drawing more obscure characters that I’d never done before. That’s actually one of the things I like about doing set cards sets, getting a chance to put my take on a wide variety of characters. I tend not to just load up a set with, say, a dozen Iron Mans. I’d rather do those big names and then throw in some more rare ones.

5. Where can my readers see your art?

They can find me at http://calslayton.blogspot.com/ and http://calslayton.deviantart.com/
Walking Dead
6. Do you have anything you would like to promote right now?

Right now just sketch card stuff. Working on several sets at the moment. One being “The Walking Dead” which I’m really excited about. Just wrapped up”John Carter: Warlord of Mars”. Got some more Marvel and maybe even some DC sets ahead of me. I just finished a cover for a “WKRP in Cincinnati” comic being published by Bluewater.

7. What is your favorite project that you have done?

That’s a tough one. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for “Shades of Blue”, my first published comic book work. I wish that I was drawing at the level I am now back when I was working on it. That was over a decade ago and it’s hard to look back at my work because I know it’s not as good as I could do today. But Jim Harris (the creator and writer) and I had a lot of fun working on it and I learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. If I could make a living just drawing that series, I’d be pretty happy.

8. What are your plans for the future?
Firefly
I’ve written a graphic novel called “Spookytown”, which I’ve been trying to wrap up over the past several years, but paying work always gets in the way. It’s horror/detective story. You can check it more about it here...  http://www.spookytown.net/
